This is an 8.5 mm single-ply square blade made entirely from premium Hinoki wood, crafted exclusively in Japan. (“Kaku” means square in Japanese.)
The visible lines on the blade are natural grain patterns unique to Hinoki wood—they are not cracks or signs of bonding. Each blade is a single, solid piece of pure Hinoki, making every surface one-of-a-kind.
Darker never uses glued Hinoki segments; glue is applied only to attach the handle to the blade.
Please note: Hinoki is a delicate wood and prone to damage under heavy impact. Even with rubbers attached, placing the blade forcefully on the table can cause it to crack. For this reason, many Japanese players carry a spare blade as a precaution.
