Ping pong balls – such a small but very important part of the game. After all, you can't play ping pong without the ball, can you? Ping pong requires special balls that are much smaller in size than balls for any other sports, but that doesn’t mean that just any small ball will do for a ping pong match.
Classic table tennis balls can be made of two materials:
plastics (this material is becoming the industry standard);
cellulose.
Regardless of the material used, the ping pong balls must weigh exactly 2.7 g, although slightly heavier models are now available specifically for outdoor play. Another important parameter is the diameter of the ball – it must not exceed 40 mm. Best ping pong balls meet both these requirements, as well as other professional demands:
correct ball shape without any dents and bumps;
seamless surface;
good springiness and sufficient hardness;
color – either white or orange, with a matte finish.
Some manufacturers have their own rating system but these aren’t currently professionally approved. The only requirement for a professional ping pong game is the ITTF (International Table Tennis Federation) approval that is always printed on the ball.
