Ping Pong Rubbers

All ping pong rackets have special padding that is called a ping pong rubber. Usually, this rubber has two layers – foam/sponge underneath and an actual rubber pad on the playing surface. Ping pong rubbers directly affect the way the player handles the ball, that’s why all professional ping pong players look for a perfect combination of a racket base and a rubber. Let’s now explore how to navigate in the huge range of ping pong rubbers!

Table tennis rubbers are available in black and red colours, and one side of a racket must have a black rubber, another side – a red one. The most common types of ping pong rubbers are:

  • short pips – provides more speed but less spin and is normally used for blocking, hitting, and counterattacking;
  • long pips – a rubber with a slower speed, suitable for games in defensive style;
  • antispin – another defensive rubber with a low speed
  • inverted – a smooth rubber with pips in is available in a wide range of speeds and spins and is the best for attacking.

Another important factor to consider is the thickness and density of the sponge layer. The thinner the sponge, the more control the player has; the lower the density, the higher the spin rate at lower speeds.
